You know very well when AutoCon is in town it's always a party. It was no different for the group's first car show on the East Coast. Without any intention of pissing off New Yorkers, the show was called AutoCon New York, but was actually held in the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center. Along with AutoCon, we had no idea what to expect, this being an inaugural event. To our pleasant surprise the cars gathered were a diverse bunch of well-executed builds.
We're highlighting 10 truly great builds, many of which have already been featured inside Super Street and/or appeared on the cover of the magazine. There's no doubt the hype for the R32 is real right now. But while people are trying to cop R32s, Cory has been loyal to his R33. The 500hp icon gets driven daily, and his shop, Atlantic Motorsports, builds some of the craziest Evos and Skylines around.
Cory Peterson's Nissan Skyline GT-R R33
Nawshin Basher's Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
Anybody can slap rare parts on a car, but executing it in the same manner that Nawshin built his Evo is rare. Like many Evo owners, it was Tarzan Yamada and the legendary Cyber Evo that inspired Nawshin to create this masterpiece. He didn't have the aggressive TE37V Mark II wheels at the show, but regardless, in our eyes it was the best Evo there.
Paolo's Scion FR-S
We didn't get Paolo's theme right away, but after a quick walk around it be came very clear his car is a tribute to the one and only Drift King, Keiichi Tsuchiya. The color scheme is very similar to Keiichi's AE86, and though it only has basic bolt-ons, the TRD aero and fact that he drifts this car is enough for us.
Alex Witkin's Subaru Impreza WRX
Maryland native Alex Witkin can certainly relate, since he, too, is from the Gran Turismo generation and was greatly influenced by it during his formative years. Even now, as the CFO of an FDA regulatory consulting firm, he credits racing video games like GT3 along with the matchbox cars and Legos he played with at an even younger age as the basis for his car obsession.
Aum San's Lexus SC400
Third time's a charm, right? This is Aum's third Lexus SC and as far we can tell, it's absolutely perfect. As you would expect, Aum is a huge Ueno fan, but if you're wondering why he's not rocking a Vertex kit it's because the BN Sports kit is almost impossible to find in the states. Besides, he has a complete Vertex kit sitting at home if he wants change it up. In the rear you'll find a Nissan 350Z rocket bunny wing that's been custom fitted into his trunk, while inside you have the quintessential Bride/Takata combo and, of course, a Vertex steering wheel.
Jason Pham's Lexus GS400
Who says VIP is the only way to go with a Lexus GS. Similar to Aum's car, Jason ditched the 1UZ-FE in favor for the more potent 2JZ-GTE. To be even more anti-VIP, he's added Bride seats, Endless brakes, and an Exedy triple-disc clutch.
Ted Solano's Mazda RX-7
You would think something as perfect as Ted's RE Amemiya RX-7 would be kept in the garage, away from New York's infamously terrible streets. But that's not the case at all. This FD3S gets driven, and driven hard! The full RE Amemiya RX-7 sees a lot of track time as well. Under the hood is a street-ported 13B-REW paired with a Borg Warner S366 twin scroll single turbo.
Phil Barones's Porsche
You don't see many RE Amemiya RX-7s on the West Coast; these guys know exactly what we like. Sure, there are purists who will cringe at the Porsche front-end conversion, but we think it's sexy and still fresh.
Brian McCoy's Acura RSX
It doesn't get any better than Brian McCoy's RSX. It's been converted to RHD and the turbo K20A2 is highlighted with a shaved and tucked engine bay. Brian tells us it's almost a full J's Racing catalog car with a sprinkle of Mugen.
Jason Gale's Nissan 370Z
You may or may not recognize this car. When we featured the car it was rocking a Varis Arising II body kit, but then Jason stepped it up a notch and went full Kamikaze widebody on the car. It's also worth noting it's the first full Varis Kamikaze kit in the States. Don't think it's just a looker though, Jason has 500hp on tap to take on any car on the freeway. Pop the hood and he won't brag about horsepower; instead, Jason will tell you about his ultra-rare Top Secret strut tower brace. It's even harder to find than those zebra Yeezey's you're looking for we're talking about just four units in the entire world.
